Want to know more about living in Chester? Here is your Chester area guide for 2026….

Chester is a historic city rich in character and culture. Famous for its Roman walls, medieval architecture and riverside charm, it’s no surprise that it appeals to families, professionals and anyone looking for a mix of city living and gorgeous surroundings. Chester is also part of Cheshire’s highly sought-after residential belt and offers excellent schools, local amenities and easy access to major transport links.

Schools and education

The city is well-known for its strong school options. Both Abbey Gate College and Bishop’s Bluecoat offer outstanding independent education. Local state options include Christleton Primary School, Queen’s Park High School whilst The King’s private school is one of the UK’s oldest schools and renowned for academic excellence and its extracurricular opportunities.

From small class sizes to state-of-the-art facilities, Chester’s range of schools are ideal for families looking for quality education.

Commuting and transport

From Chester, Manchester can be reached by train in about 50 minutes. It’s just 40 minutes to Liverpool and two hours to London Euston. The city also has fantastic links to local roads including the M53, M56 and A55 which connect Chester with Liverpool, Manchester, North Wales and beyond. Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Manchester Airport can also both be reached in an hour.

Town centre and shopping

Shopping in Chester promises independent boutiques and familiar high street brands. Chester Rows (a unique two-level medieval shopping street), Hoole Road and the Grosvenor Shopping Centre are some of the highlights. Other popular names include Zara, Primark, Jigsaw, Jo Malone, H&M, Tessuti and Barbour while smaller brands like Seasalt and Harriet & Dee shouldn’t be missed either. Cheshire Oaks Designer Village is also a short drive away where you can find designer names for less.

Plus, there’s Chester Market offering fresh produce and artisanal goods. It’s open six days a week and has even won awards for its shopping and eating options. In fact, it makes for a great day out with the kids, your friends or even a solo-shopping spree.

Cafes, bars and restaurants

One thing’s for sure, you certainly won’t go hungry in Chester. From riverside spots and cosy pubs to casual cafes and brunch favourites, eating out is a pleasure. Some of the best names include Hickory’s, The Botanist, The Chef’s Table, No 1 City Road, Arkle, Opera Grill and BarLounge.

Whether you’re looking for Italian, Pan-Asian, tapas or something else, you’re sure to find something to suit all types of budget and occasion.

Outdoor and active living

It might be a bustling city, but Chester also has a fantastic outdoor scene. Grosvenor Park, the River Dee and Chester Zoo’s surrounding gardens give locals some much-needed green space to explore. Spend the day cycling along the river, walking the city walls or head to a nearby tennis club, golf course or gym.

On the topic of Chester Zoo, it makes for a great day out as does Blue Planet Aquarium, Chester Race Course and Chester Cathedral. The city even has its own walking tours so you can get to see the best of the area, led by an expert.

Housing and neighbourhoods

Whatever property type fits your lifestyle, Chester is sure to have something. The city centre houses historic Georgian townhouses and modern apartments with riverside views. Slightly outside, in suburbs like Hoole, Handbridge and Christleton, you’ll find detached family homes with large gardens and garages. And if you’re looking for something a little bigger, the surrounding countryside is sure to impress.

Chester has something for every need and it’s a city that grows with you. In fact, many students have arrived for the university, stayed here for work and then ended up setting up flourishing family homes.

Pet-friendly living

Riverside walks, open park space and local cafes that welcome dogs – Chester is very pet-friendly meaning it’s a great choice for the whole family. Even better, you don’t need to travel too far for vets, groomers or supplies as the city has plenty of options.
